Weddings should be remembered for their moments of laughter, joy, and humour—not stress. Jitters the day of the wedding are normal. Your wedding is a life-changing and exciting moment. But persistent anxiety and stress leading up to the wedding can have a serious impact on the bride, groom, and wedding party. As a professional wedding photographer based in Toronto, I’ve had the pleasure of attending dozens of weddings.
Here are a few tips I’d recommend for staying stress-free on your wedding day:
Hire a Wedding Planner
The simplest way to alleviate stress on your wedding day is to hire a professional wedding coordinator. From start to finish, and everywhere in between, this person will have your best interests at heart. If things get hectic, and the bridesmaid bouquets arrive in the wrong colour, or the table seating gets jumbled up, you can rely on this person to resolve the issue. If you’re not interested in hiring a wedding planner, consider arranging for a close friend or family member to help you prepare for your wedding.
Find Time to Spend with Your New Spouse
Weddings can be overwhelming. One thing’s for certain: the day will go by faster than you can imagine. It’s important you find time to be alone with your new spouse—even for as little as five minutes—to cherish those magical moments together. One thing that I always suggest to my Couples is a “One Minute Married Moment”, where right after you are pronounced “Husband and Wife” and walk up the aisle filled with joy – we will steal away outside under a tree or in a private room where I will let you both just soak in all in. I won’t direct you or anything just capture your newly wedded bliss and honestly everyone tells me after their Wedding that that “Moment” was always one of their favourite memories from their Wedding!
Get Your Beauty Sleep
Nothing is more important before your wedding day than getting a good night’s sleep, and eating a nutrient-rich breakfast. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, try taking a few deep breaths, and dabbing some lavender oil—a natural relaxant—on your pillow. For breakfast, avoid drinking caffeine and eating fatty or oily foods. Fruit is always a safe bet.
Leave Your Phone at Home
Although scrolling through social media and posting selfies on your wedding day may be tempting, it can add unnecessary stress to your day. Experiencing your wedding day through a screen is no way to make memories. Leaving your phone at home will ensure you make the best wedding memories, and aren’t distracted by feeds on social media. Leave it to your professional photographer to take your photos for you.
You wedding will be one of the most special and memorable days of your life. Leave your stress behind, and rely on friends, family, and professional wedding planners and photographers to ensure your day runs without a glitch.
